After watching "Gordon Ramsey's Kitchen Nightmares" last night, and seeing moldy food and colonies of cockroaches that infested the midtown restaurant he turned around, I started to wonder how our own neighborhood places have fared in the health department inspections, which Wesley has blogged about before.
Turns out that shortly after Bliss on 46th and Skillman underwent new management, their inspection ratings took a steep nosedive. On 8/22/07 they were given a disgusting 50 rating (anything over 28 constitutes a failure and requires a follow up compliance inspection). Their previous rating back on 5/1/07 was a somewhat high, but still passing 17. In contrast, Quaint, just down the block from Bliss on Skillman, received a very respectable 2 score (though that was back on 11/8/06 - let's hope they've kept it up).
When will the health department start requiring restaurants to post their scores? And why did it take a reality TV show to expose the filth that the former Dillon's (now rebranded as Purnima) was shoveling?
Why the hell should I trek all the way out to Queens? Answers within.

Not Very Blissful

i've heard mixed things about bliss, so i've never eaten there, but i HAVE eaten at quaint several times. good thing their inspection was ok.
Yikes, a friend of mine-in Jersey- was just noticing that Bliss was listed in Zagat's and she was interested in going.
Both blissful! Not sure what is going out there with comments about Bliss. One local posts how great Quaint is and implying bad things about Bliss. Quaint is EXCELLENT, and Bliss is EXCELLENT. Both are worth coming to Sunnyside for. We are lucky to have them here. Respective owners, Tim and Maruf, are friendly and help each other. They work 20 hours a day. They care. They are making their dreams come true. They keep their restaurants spotless and have EXCEPTIONALLY good inspection records. A local recently called in a malicious report on one of them which was proved untrue. What is going on? Sales fact: When four gas stations are at four corners, the four get more biz than one alone because people "go there" for fuel. We now have at least 5 excellent places to draw in diners. The more the merrier! Susan, tell your friend to come to either Quaint or Bliss, both GREAT.love and peace, ginger
yes ginger we are lucky to have both restaurants here in sunnyside and i wish both businesses the best of luck (after Bliss cleans up its act). but this is a BLOG and a lot of times people who write on blogs state their opinions and preferences. And in the above post I merely stated the fact that Bliss was given a failing rating by the Board of Health. As for the malicious locals, who you seem to suggest are trying to sabotage Bliss, the board of health's rating for them clearly states,
"5.) Evidence of flying insects or live flying insects present in facility's food and/or non-food areas.
6.) Evidence of mice or live mice present in facility's food and/or non-food areas."
Did this "malicious individual" also plant flies and mice in the restaurant? Obviously Bliss does NOT "keep [its] restaurant spotless." 50 violation points is NOT spotless. It's a disgrace.
It just makes me wonder why you are so vigorously defending Bliss? Do you work for them? Are you an investor? Or maybe you are just a foodie who doesn't mind the occasional food bourne illness and eating food with mice shit in it.
I've been eating at Bliss since it opened. The first chef - fabulous (that's how they got a
Zagat rating), 2nd chef- not so good. Current chef -innovative and excellent. The desserts, to die for. And I've never had a problem with cleanliness there. It's always been super clean - including the restrooms. I recommend it to everyone.
